Great hardware and lumber store in Vernon, Texas. Country atmosphere with friendly helpful, knowledgeable people. Very nice compared to the big boxer stores.

I have done some business with Sumner & Colley & have always had a great & satisfying experience ,great help (if,needed & info) but this morning I really had a very crude & rude woman who is employed there to accuse me of inferring / implicating) that this business was trying to (cheat) me . I NEVER EVER inferred or concluded such a thing. I was ONLY asking for an invoice & nothing more so as to pay for some lumber & I have a gentleman working on my house & he is as honest & upfront as anyone could be (my opinion) but when you are paying over a thousand dollars you definitely want a invoice before paying. Very crude & very rude employee to say the very least. They scream "Keep your money in Vernon" which I try hard to do but when you have an encounter with such crudeness, rudeness & obnoxious employees as this lady it makes you want to take your business out of town yet I absolutely won't do that & give her that satisfacation besides unlike this woman we should all want & wish to keep our business in Vernon (if at all possible) & to think this woman definitely should want & wish to keep the business here since she works for here & not elsewhere. I will (definitely keep) mine there despite this crude & rude person. Everyone else is exceptionally cordial & nice always has been..

I live in Vernon, and even know several employees at this business. I would love to say, I support local businesses because local businesses support me. However, I don't think this business is the case. I went in to ask for a 4 in. x 4 in. x 8 ft. cedar lumber in order to accomplish a project. I needed the one piece cut in half, to which the desk said "No problem." Paid a total of $15.24 for the lumber and headed around back to pick up the piece, when I saw the gentleman carrying a "treated 4x4x8" lumber. I exclaimed, "Oh, I already have four of those, but what I needed was cedar." Another gentleman showed me two pieces in a scrap pile (1 4ft and 1 6ft). He worked to cut the additional piece down to 4ft while I went back in with the original gentleman to pay additional fee for cedar. I thought I paid for cedar to begin with, but after he checked his book twice, tabulated on a adding machine, he punched in the register and said... "That'll be $18.40." EXTRA! $18.40 cents extra to the already paid $15.24. I now understand why Vernon gets a bad rap from time to time. Very disturbing, but I needed these pieces to complete a project. I gave the gentleman $20 and left without my change. I just could not stick around to accept any more from the counter. Lowe's and Home Depot in Wichita Falls sell this same lumber for $19-$23.
