Jamie Cawley and his crew just finished a very complicated excavation project for a historic Mill building my wife and I are renovating into a home in Portsmouth. His work included site work for a new foundation (after a building lift), pouring a reinforced grade beam and column foundation system which cantilevers over an old Mill raceway, driveway excavation, as well as various trenches for power, water and a buried propane tank. Jamie was easily accessible through the whole project and responsive to our questions and last minute requests. He was often onsite helping out his crew, it's clear he likes what he does and is proud of his company. After seeing the negative reviews here, I wanted to go on record and say that our multi-month experience with these guys was generally really good and we wouldn't hesitate to call upon them again in the future.

I too have had a negative experience with this company, very similar to Luke Herbert’s. The City of Newport referred me to them, after finding that a no-longer-used gas line in my front yard could be the reason I was smelling gas in the yard. The city said I had to have the line removed at my expense, and they referred me to RJ Cawley. I wasn’t in a position to research contractors for myself, as I usually do, and I paid the price. $2000 for tearing out the pipe and leaving a hole in my basement wall that leaks profusely whenever it rains. In addition they apparently found it unnecessary to have the 2’ x 2’ sidewalk stone they removed, replaced. They just left the dirt depression as is. They did not at any time tell me I needed to arrange to have that replaced by the city, if that’s what was required. I called the company 4 times over the next few months to come repair the leak in my basement and was told each time that someone would get back to me. Never did. As Luke said, they really did more damage than good. I’m concerned with the city referring people to this company, especially with the other very poor reviews.

More damage done than repairs Very bad experience with R.J. Cawley Contracting. They replaced an aging water line pipe in our basement. The water line was corroded but otherwise functional. In replacing the water line, R.J. Cawley Contracting failed to properly compact the soil outside the basement and failed to seal the wall around the water line. The wall now leaks heavily at the spot where the water line comes in every time it rains. So we in essence paid them $2,500 to create a new leak in our basement. They have been unresponsive to emails, calls and texts (other than sending someone to caulk the sidewalk, which proved ineffective in stopping the massive leak). Recommend staying away from these guys
