I hired Home Plumbing on recommendation from a friend/plumber in Durango. We were having an issue with our houseboat at Navajo Lake wherein the system was not cooling the houseboat. We attempted to change the thermostat thinking that might be the problem. We were unsuccessful in installing the new thermostat and, therefore called Home Plumbing. When the two workers arrived, we informed them why me were trying to change the thermostat and, asked them to have a look at why we might be having this issue. They were unable to figure out the thermostat that day and, stated they had to come back after speaking with Honeywell. It is unimaginable that HVAC specialists cannot figure out a thermostat but, this is what we were told. So, we had to pay extra for the second visit. Two invoices provide a charge for “diagnosis.” They supposedly worked on many issues including ductwork but, never told us there was a ductwork issue. $2,800.00 later and, we were still having the same issue. I decided to go into the hull to see what I could find and, it was much cooler in the hull then it was in the houseboat itself. I found huge gaps in the ductwork and disconnections in the duct work throughout the entire system. See the attached photos. I have no way of knowing if the other work that I was charged for was needed or not. What I do know is that after $2,800.00, the boat was still not being cooled. I repaired the duct work myself using 5 rolls of aluminum tape costing under $50.00. My conversations with the owner about this included a lot of blaming me for the situation even though I have no knowledge of HVAc…now I know how to repair duct work. After all of the work, I spoke with three different HVAC people. Told them about the cooler temp in the hull than in the boat and, all three stated that they would immediately diagnose it as a ductwork problem. End result - do not use Home Plumbing!! They are not competent. Not sure if I was intentionally being ripped off or, if it was just incompetence. Before you hire anyone, check your duct work…it is easy to repair on your own. I wish I had known this before hiring Home Plumbing. Check out the photos and videos attached to this review to see the painfully obvious breaches in the duct work that were not repaired by home plumbing but, by me. One video shows strings on my shirt blowing from the air breach in the duct work.

    Response from the owner

Dear Mrs. Soignier, Thank you for taking the time to review us. When you called us and brought your complaints to our attention, we explained ourselves and even offered to take the issue to arbitration, being that you are a lawyer, if that’s what it took to resolve the issue privately. Since that wasn’t something you were interested in, we did want to post this public statement. The original issue we got called out for in March of 2020 was to fix your heating system, in which the thermostat was one of the issues in your equipment. We had some issues getting the system working, and our tech wanted to get more information on the unit. After researching the equipment, we came back out and got the system up and running, and didn’t charge you for coming back out the second time. When we left, everything was working fine with the equipment. Three months later, we received another call from you that the cooling wasn’t working now. After we got there and rechecked our work, we discovered the real issue was an irreparable problem with the duct work, and not the equipment. Because of the extent of the repairs needed, it was going to be impossible to repair that day due to scheduling conflicts. Upon analysis of the situation, and discussing it, we felt, in our professional opinion, that the only thing we could do was to completely replace all of the duct work, because of the fact that the fiberglass supply air main plenum was beyond repair, whoever had installed the ductwork originally did not check the standards of this type of fiberglass duct board, which is not approved by ASHRAE Standards to be installed in this kind of application. (i.e, hull of a houseboat) Our techs took your husband down to the hold, explained to him, and visually showed him the issue. They explained in detail what the problem was. When hearing this, Mr. Soignier himself had pulled some of the kinked flex duct branches in the return air distribution system down, hoping to improve the situation on the return air system. It didn’t. The last trip we made was to only repair the branches on the return air that Mr. Soignier took out personally. We didn’t fix the supply air because it needed to be completely replaced, for the reasons we stated above, with approved duct work for that application. We never agreed to repair the duct work in the supply air. It is not that we were unable to repair it, due to “incompetency” or that the work we did while there was unnecessary. The equipment we repaired was working fine. Just because you finally came and saw the situation, and started repairing the ductwork yourself doesn’t mean that we did anything unnecessary. With that being said, you told us that you made the repairs using carpet padding and duct tape. The carpet padding you used isn’t going to withstand the heat that your unit is going to put out in heating mode, not only does this create a hazard in the future, it also isn’t up to ASHRAE Smoke and Fire Standard for repair of heating equipment duct systems. Everything our techs did was approved and requested by your husband, who was the one overseeing the work being done. We did feel the need to explain the situation a little bit more, especially because you were not present. Mr. Soignier’s explanation that he doesn’t remember what happened is likely since he was out there on his days off, “enjoying” himself, and didn’t hold up to your cross examination of events as they really happened. While we are disappointed you were not satisfied with the work we did, the techs we have sent out to your property are very knowledgeable in their field, and we stand behind their character and combined HVAC experience of over 40 years. Thank you for your business, and I hope that you have a good rest of your week.

Frank the owner was very nice, came to service our tankless water heater. Couldn’t get the lines to flush, tried for 3.5 hours without success, and tried charging 437. FOR HIS TIME. No service was done, no parts were replaced. He settled for 350 but still, NOTHING WAS DONE. 350 Dollars down the drain and half a day wasted for someone to unsuccessfully flush our water heater. Never again. Do not recommend.

Unfortunately they were unable to help us get our water situation fixed. I understand it is Xmas Eve and respect the boss sending his guy home after a long day but we can't use our water with out it backing up onto the floor. So too bad for us. Merry Christmas. It's ok M&R will get the job done.
