This company was a nightmare to do business with. I called them on Tuesday Oct. 27. 2020. The receptionist was polite and told me there was a service fee of $59 for them to come out to our house and take a look at our water heater. The temperature sensor had failed and was leaking water through the well. We agreed to the $59. We were told they would wear masks and have covers on their shoes so they wouldn't track mud. They came out Wednesday, were here all of 20 mins and told us we owed them an additional $170 for a diagnostic fee. We were both upset by this. I immediately called their office and asked why this fee wasn't disclosed. They couldn't even tell us why the part had failed. Our water heater is only 3 years old. The office told us there was nothing they could do about the fee but would send an email to their accounting department. The technician, Walter, was condescending and acted like a used car salesman. He told us he would take some of charge off our bill, but we had to agree then and there to have him do the work and pay him immediately because "we couldn't have it both ways". He made it sound like there was more wrong with the water heater than there actually was. He also told us that he would mark us as an emergency repair and have the work done within a couple of days. We paid them $855. We did not receive any sort of breakdown for parts and labor. Walter also claimed that his price was fair because supposedly water heaters are going for $6000 during the pandemic. We checked around and found this information to be false. He tells us we will get a call tomorrow with the information for the follow up appointment. They also never wore the shoe covers we were told they would. They tracked mud all over the entry and stairs. At this point I wasn't surprised. Two days later we hear back from Gem Plumbing and Heating. They will not be doing the work until Monday, Nov 2nd. The woman who called us acted like she was doing us a favor even though so far they hadn't kept their word or charged us fairly. She tells us they will be at our house at 8 am Monday. We knew at the time on Wednesday that we were overpaying by a lot but we wanted hot water back. We had looked up the parts that we needed and it would have cost around $200 but the vendors online showed we would be waiting 7-10 days. Had Gem Plumbing and heating disclosed the actual wait time we would have passed on using their service. Monday Nov 2nd. They were late to show up. They arrived at our house at 9:15 am not 8am. They installed the well and temperature sensor. Then informed us that they had taken pictures of how they wired it so if anyone "played" with their work they'd know and their 6 month warranty would be void. My partner and I hated every minute of dealing with this company. We would NEVER hire them again ever.

GEM was called to look at garbage disposal. I had the 220v for the oven locked off in the box, and I told them I was working on it. (They also saw what I was doing while explaining the issue). They went and after ten minutes, cut my lock off the breaker and turned it on. Causing me to be struck with 220 volts. Luckily I don’t think I took the whole brunt of it. But definitely don’t appreciate that. Bad worksmanship!

Unimpressed. Needed a quote for repairing/replacing my hot water heater. Tech only wanted to replace unit (easier repair). Asked for a quote for both options of repairing or replacing. Was told I would receive an email with both quotes. Never received and email. Called to inquire. Never received return call. Needless to say I will be taking my business elsewhere and will never recommend
