On September 7, 2021, I called Dvorak Plumbing based on their 5 star review, to get my existing water heater serviced. The pilot light kept on going out. When I told them the Yr Make & model, they immediately said on the phone that I needed a new water heater, that would cost me $1200. I had my water heater serviced by Black Hills Service Guard for the last 9 yrs and they never said that, they just fixed the problem & replaced the pilot light assembly. So I insisted that Dvorak do the same. They said they would be at my house at 3pm but they didn't actually arrive until 4pm. They had the right parts with them and when they left they said it was fixed. However, they had turned down the setting on the water heater to its lowest position A, which didn't give me any hot water. So I turned it to the C position and went to sleep. The next morning, I went to examine the water heater and it was spraying hot water all over the wall! It was coming from the connection between the overflow pipe and the side of the water heater. I called Dvorak about it and of course they said they didn't cause it and a new Water Heater would now cost me $1500,. I called around and got another company to install a 40gal replacement for $1000. Dvorak sent me a bill for $265 for the work they did.
Response from the owner
In reply to the statement made above, we feel need to clarify on our end what we suggested to the homeowner. The customer called and told us that he has to continually relight his water heater because the pilot light keeps going out. We asked for the model and serial number off of the water which he provided us with. After calling our water heater supplier we found that the water was 17 years old. Over the 43 years we have been in business our first suggestion is to replace the water heater because you never know how a water heater that old will work with the new parts. We gave the homeowner the estimate to replace the water heater of $1300.00 or $500.00-$600.00 to repair the water heater not knowing exactly what we were up against. The homeowner decided he wanted to repair the water heater so we sent out our plumber and he was able to repair the water heater by installing a new pilot assembly. Our plumber did not need to shut down any water to the water heater because he was able to restore the pilot light by unscrewing and removing the old pilot assembly and replacing it with the new. Our plumber ran the new new pilot assembly through the cycling of the temperature control to make sure it stayed lit when it need to shut down and re-fire when it needed to heat. Our policy is also to set the temperature control on the A setting on this brand of heater because anytime you install a new part on a water heater the thermostat can react differently and we do not want to take a chance on the water getting too hot and scalding someone. The total bill for service work was $237.00. We do not know how Black Hills Service Guard works therefore we can not respond to that. The next morning we got a call stating that now the water heater was spraying water, so we sent our plumber back out to assess the situation. The water heater was indeed spraying water out from a weld next to the temperature and pressure relief valve. This type of leak can be be caused especially on a water heater of this age by the cooling of the water heater tank and then the reheating and expansion of the tank after the repair, this is one of the reasons we suggest replacing the heater, it is not uncommon for this to happen, We needed to shut down the water to the heater but found that the valve to heater was inoperable so that forced us to shut down the water to the entire house. Also note that we did charge to shut down the water heater even though we suggested the replacement not the repair. We then explained to the homeowner that now the heater does need to be replaced and if we installed the same brand water heater that we could return the part we installed and he would be billed only for the labor and trip charge for a total of $119.00 and the cost of the new heater would be $1287.00 which included the replacement of the water shutoff valve to the heater for a total of $1406.00. We also commented that if we got the new water installed in less time than estimated we would adjust the final cost accordingly. We agree that it is unfortunate that water heater began to leak after the repair was performed but the homeowner request was to repair the water heater not replace it. Highly recommend they worked us in as quick as they could when everyone else told us 2 months out. The replaced my main water line into the house whole they where there they fixed a leaky faucet and ended up not having water pressure in my tub they stayed took extra time to flush the lines out and get it working again. Price was very reasonable. Will be using for all my plumbing needs. And the guys that showed up were extremely helpful. Every person I had the pleasure of meeting or talking to were very professional and very nice people
