I called three companies to come out to my house and give me an estimate to improve or replace my heating system. A-1 was the second company to come. Company #1 recommended that we add two registers to the great room. They also suggested that we replace our old furnace with a heat pump. By the end of the day, I had an emailed bid with extensive information as to costs, suggestions, rebate, etc. No charge. Company #2 , A-1 Team, recommended that we add an additional register to the living room. They suggested a ductless unit be added to the great room, but was unsure if one would fit in the available space as the windows are close to the ceiling. I asked for a written proposal and was told that one would be sent as soon as they could investigate the size and pricing. I was charged $69. No proposal was ever sent. Company #3 suggested that we add two registers to the living room and replace the furnace with one with a higher efficiency rating. A detailed proposal was sent two days later by mail. No charge. We went with the first company who was very thorough and professional. They handled all the rebates and came out a week later to check how the system was working. It has been thirty days since A-1 came. I called them today to complain that I had never received a proposal and had been charged for it. The person who answered told me he would investigate and call me back. He called me back within a short time and told me that I had been charged a very reasonable service call, which is what I had supposedly requested. I insisted that what I had requested was a BID, which I had never received. I feel that the company greatly mishandled this situation.

Had a ductless mini split system installed (mostly for heating). Experience was very positive UNTIL the first summer we used the AC mode for an extended period. At that point condensate started running down the wall from behind the fan unit. Verified that the condensation drain was not blocked, and placed a service call. Turns out the connection between the unit's condensation hose and tailpipe was leaking. This is an unpressurized connection, and short of an earthquake (don't have many of those) shouldn't fail on its own, unless not installed properly in the first place. Unit was out of 1 year warranty (not too much call for AC up here), and tech called base to talk it over. Returned saying that boss would need to OK warranty job, but was unavailable in a meeting and would contact later BUT would need payment for the service call "so he wouldn't get in trouble with the office". Gullible us handed over a check with the proviso that it not be cashed until we had a chance to take complaint to the boss. Well guess what! Ethical Fail 1: Cashed a check they promised wouldn't be cashed without talking to us Ethical Fail 2: Now I can't get anyone there to return my calls

We have a geothermal unit, and we asked them to come out and troubleshoot the issue. The service person was nice, and seemed to know what he was talking about...and after about $800.00 we had some refrigerant added to the system (not cheap) and a new motherboard on the system. About 2 weeks later we fired up the A/C on a near 100 degree day and it was blowing hot air. We called them back out to tell us all the refrigerant had leaked out and it would cost over $600.00 just to add nitrogen to the system and detect the leak. We called another company and they found the leak in less than an hour. He showed us where the leak was happening and it was pretty obvious. So we spent a bunch of money on refrigerant that just went out the leak with A-1. On top of that, it cost less than $200.00 to find the leak (using nitrogen) and the repairs are about the same cost as just the diagnostics quote from A-1. I can't help feel a little used by A-1 in this experience...it seemed like the prices were very high. I wish we would have called the other company first, I can't help but think it would have been much cheaper.
